The more I research the world of RC helis, the more I like it. The best of everything is actually to learn more about these fantastic devices by experimentation. In the past, the lack of information made me purchase bad quality helis and waste my money, so this is why now I’m determined to share everything I know and help you make informed decisions. Today I want to talk about outdoor RC helicopters, because I think it is a topic that is not discussed enough online and that also has a specific weight when deciding which RC heli is best for you.
Two types of helis – Indoors and Outdoors
Among the many types of RC helicopters you can find, another division is based on the scenario that the helicopter is intended to fly at. Most people say that big helis are designed for outdoors only, while small ones can be flown inside the house to make sure the operation is optimal. However, this is something that I don’t completely agree with.
It’s true (and also logic) that big RC aviation gadgets are better for the outdoors, where there are fewer chances of crashing something or hurting other people. However, the rule seems to fail for some small RC helis, because I know a few models that are light in weight and not that big in size, and still give the most fun when used outdoors than indoors.
As you see, the confusion may come when you see a small RC helicopter, which by the way, is the one that beginners think about most of the times, when starting with this hobby. This is why I consider important to speak in a more realistic sense about where to fly what.
Realistically speaking, any RC helicopter that can be flown outside, is an outdoors aircraft. The problem comes when the weather conditions are a bit windy, then you may want to think it twice before flying your gadget outside. In fact, some light RC helis manufacturers say that it’s safe to fly your heli with light wind conditions.
How to know if an RC heli is for outdoors?
Well, not all depends on the size or weight of the helicopter. It’s true that this can be a deterministic factor to say if it’s safe to fly it outside or not, but something that you also want to check is the recommendation of the manufacturer. Most respected brands, actually include a legend on the box that says if the ship is designed for outdoors or indoors. But in case you can’t find this, a good thing to look at is the Kvs of the motor, because a powerful motor will move the heli in most weather conditions.
Don’t think that this means you can fly with hurricane winds, not even real helicopters do this, but depending on the Kvs of the motor, you can get a good idea of where to fly each model.
The Kvs of a motor are the RPMs (revolutions per minute) you get per volt. This is a parameter that you can check on the manufacturer’s website and sometimes even on the box of the helicopter. The higher the Kvs, the more powerful the motors are. This means that if you see a small RC helicopter that comes with a high number of Kvs, then you can use this one outdoors as well.
As you can see, it is a combination of both weight and size, with the power of the motor.
So which one is best, indoors or outdoors?
As I always say, it depends, primarily on what you want to do with the heli. If you want to start with this hobby and you have no previous experience with helicopters, then an indoors and coaxial RC helicopter may be the best fit for you. On the other hand, if you already have a bit of experience and want to take the next step, then you can start considering outdoors RC helicopters as part of your choices.
In my case, I love outdoors RC helis, but something you have to have in mind that if it’s raining outside or the weather is just not fine, then you’ll miss the fun of flying your gadget, so my solution is simple: I buy both types!
My best picks for outdoors RC helis
Let’s get to the fun part of this, the helis. I’ve compiled a list with some of the best outdoor RC helicopters so that you can make your choice, easily. Take into consideration that this may not be the best or most complete list, but I made sure to include the helis that I’ve seen that really work great.
MJX F645 F45 4ch LCD RC Helicopter
This is a good size and solid model that you can find at a very affordable price. Its fame is that you’ll definitely enjoy this gadget and at the same time you’ll be getting one of the most reliable and entertaining gadgets of all.
The complete heli is 70cm, from the farthest point of the main rotor blade to the farthest point of the tail rotor blade. It is a 4 channel RC helicopter, so it is best for an intermediate pilot. The body is made of metal to offer a solid base for the motors and gears, and it’s definitely a nice gadget to either fly or display in a room.
This helicopter can come in two different colors, green and red. Both of them look great, but if you ask me I prefer the red one. Something else that is important to know about this heli is that even when it’s more suited for an intermediate pilot, it is very easy to fly, if you have a bit of experience flying similar helis, so you won’t have to worry about having fun with this marvelous gadget.
Spare parts are available for this fantastic RC aviation device, and in case you want to do aerial photography, the MJX F645 F45 can hold and lift a GoPro camera so that you take amazing footage. This actually sounds like a great idea, especially if you consider that a drone that is designed to have an HD camera on board is actually more than $1000 dollars.
Blade 120 SR RTF
This is one of those helis that are quite confusing, because at first sight, the Blade 120 SR could seem to be an indoors design, but truth is that it comes with a very powerful motor that makes it suitable for both indoors and outdoors (this is the type of helis you want to get).
Even when the design is very simple and light in weight, the structure of this helicopter is very solid, and thus, it can handle crashes and rough landings. The RTF comes completely assembled out of the box, and needs nothing to start flying. This model also features a BNF (bind and fly) version that you can get at a lower price than the RTF (ready to fly), if you happen to have a compatible transmitter for this bird.
Take a word of precaution here, because even when the motors are powerful and you can fly this RC helicopter outdoors, you want to do it only if wind is none to a slight breeze, otherwise, take advantage of this being an indoors helicopter as well and have fun inside your house.
Very important to mention, the spare parts for this model are available and easy to find, so if you decide this is your next RC helicopter, you can rest assured that you’ll have the right back up in case you need it.
Blade Nano CP X RTF
When we speak about the Blade Nano CP X, we’re starting to move to a higher level in the range of helicopters that the Blade family has to offer. This helicopter is more for the expert pilot, so don’t make the serious mistake of confusing this heli with one for a beginner, just because it is very small.
As well as the previous heli, this can also be flown both indoors and outdoors, and if you decide to fly this heli outside, make sure you do it when the wind is light and no abrupt changes in the speed of it are expected. This would definitely end your fun time.
The Blade Nano will surprise you as well with the amazing power of its motors, also, it is capable of doing some 3D flying, so take my word when I say that this is a heli for the advanced pilot. The structure of the helicopter as well is pretty solid, and it has to be, since 3D flying involves a few crashes from time to time, also, know that this fantastic helicopter has an artificial stabilization system that will give you a great experience.
This is the smallest RC helicopter of its kind (approximately 200 mm), but as I previously mentioned, it is capable of doing many great things.
Spare parts for this helicopter are being fabricated as of today, and therefore you shouldn’t be worried about not finding them in case you need any.
Walkera V450D03 6Ch RTF Heli w/ Devo7
This is a big size helicopter that is more like the MJX model that we saw previously on this page. The size and weight of this helicopter makes it perfect to use it outside when the wind is not that fast. Also, you must know that there are two versions of this heli, one it’s made of carbon fiber and metal, and the other is made of plastic. The one that I’m recommending here is the plastic one, why? Because it is lighter and withstands crashes pretty well too.
Walkera always offers high quality products, and the V450D03 model is not the exception of the rule. This model is completely pre-assembled when you get it out of the box, so you don’t have to worry about that. The other good thing about it is that it comes with a Devo7 transmitter, which is great because you can use this radio with other helis as well.
The construction of this heli is pretty solid, and the parts that are used to build it are superb high quality. This is a very powerful outdoors RC helicopter, and you should consider this when flying this amazing heli. The spare parts for this device are still available and therefore you should have no problems to get any replacements in case you need them.
Align T-Rex 500E Super Combo Kit
Align is one of the brands that offer super high quality products for the super high fans of this hobby. These RC helis are designed for expert pilots as well, and many of these helis are featured in world class competitions, where master pilots squeeze the very last drop of energy that these helis have (which by the way is a lot).
The T-Rex product line is a very famous one, and the 500E Super Combo kit offers you not only the experience of flying a world class outdoors RC helicopter, but also, the chance to assemble it. This is why this kit is only for those who understand (or want to) the way RC helicopters work. Having the opportunity to assemble these things is amazing, because it gives you a complete new perspective of these devices.
Align is a company that engineers all its products, thus, quality is assured. The construction is made of solid carbon fiber, and this device is designed for the rude use. This kit comes with everything you need to assemble the complete RC helicopter, including the motor, servos, electronic speed control, gyro, and carbon fiber blades. The only thing you’ll need is to get a compatible transmitter to enjoy the second part of this experience: the flight time.
