Top 10 Best Mini and Nano Drones Reviewed

Today’s post is all about the best mini and nano drones in the market. We’ll learn why these are so popular, and you’ll end up discovering that getting started with drones is not as hard or expensive as you thought.

I have to disclose that it is hard to say that one of these drones is better than the other, and there are two reasons for that:

  1. These drones are pretty much toys people use to get started in the hobby, which basically means you can have fun with all of them. That is the main goal of drones like these.
  2. Many of these drones share only the size category, but are different in many or every other way, making it hard (and unrealistic) to compare and rank them.

Thus, the table below is more a collection of the drones I feel confident recommending and not necessarily a ranking. Also, the prices won’t make you break the bank, yet the experience you get as a consumer can definitely spark that taste for drones, if so, keep exploring this site, and if not, you won’t regret having tried.

All in all, this is a great starting point for anyone with desires to fly a drone.

What are mini and nano drones?

You’ve probably seen amazing aerial footage of gorgeous beaches and landscapes that are captured using a drone with camera. This is why drones are most famous for.

However, the hobby of drones is not only in taking aerial footage, but also in merely flying the thing. It is actually the first step.

If you find yourself at this point, there is not a better way to get started than with mini and nano drones.

The main difference between mini and nano drones, is that mini drones are small drones that may fit on the extended palm of your hand, while nano drones are smaller, and their size could be measured with your fingers.

While differences in sizes could matter, I think what is really important is to understand why people love them more every day.

Why are mini and nano drones so popular?

There are several answers to this question…

  1. They are cheap, in fact, super cheap. All the drones on this list will cost you less than 100 dollars, and in fact, some may cost you even less than 20 USD!!!
  2. In most cases (if not all), these drones don’t need FAA registration since they weigh less than 0.55 lbs or 250 grams.
  3. Small drones are for indoors use, and thus, great to have fun with the kids at the living room.
  4. Since they are small and cheap, people feel very confident about flying them and if they break, there is no remorse of any kind, so they are perfect to get started.

Believe it or not, these are very powerful reasons for beginner pilots to choose smaller drone models over the big and more advanced ones.

It’s important to say that even if FAA registration is not required, the rules of safe flights are still applicable. Click on that link to learn more about them.

You’ll discover that flying drones can get very complex, especially for beginners, and that is why mini and nano drones are among the favorites of everyone.

A few things to know about these drones

I consider important to tell you a few basics of these drones, so you know in general terms what these gadgets are about.

  1. Although FAA registration may not be required, you are required to fly safe and not make anything risky (can’t stress enough safety) with these drones, not even indoors.
  2. Mini and nano drones may not have a camera: Most drones in this category do not come with a camera, and the ones that may have it, may have very limited video and photo recording capabilities, so don’t expect a lot in terms of aerial photography from these drones. They are mostly toys people use to get a feel of how to fly a drone.
  3. While these may not have a camera and are not suitable for the outdoors, drones technology has been evolving every day and you may be surprised by some of the features these drones can have.
  4. Not for the outdoors: These drones will fly well indoors only. They are not manufactured to resist outside wind, even light air breezes may lead to a crash or drag and take away your drone.

Best mini and nano drones reviews

Let’s get started with the fun part of this post. The actual reviews of drones. I like this part because is where I get to test things, do research, and let everyone know about my findings.

The Hubsan X4 H107C

Hubsan is a very big name in the drone’s industry. These guys produce top quality gadgets and they make sure to let that clear on every single drone they make. The X4 H107C is not the exception to this rule.

Something every great drone must have is way to stabilize itself while flying, otherwise the flight is very erratic, and the experience is awful. The most effective solution in the industry for this is a gyro system, and the X4 comes with a 6-axis one.

Each axis represents a motion path in which the drone can move. For instance, left and right represent one motion path, the same goes for up and down, and front and back.

Drones use 6-axis gyros for stabilization because they also use rotational movements to fly. Here is a user-friendly yet deep and detailed explanation of how drones fly.

For now, and if you don’t want to learn the theory, just know this: This drone can fly as smooth as a baby’s cheek.

Although it is light in weight, its frame is solid and strong, so like I said, it is perfect for beginner pilots.

This drone has a 0.3 MP camera embedded, so you’ll be able to record video while flying, yet a Micro SD card is required, and the drone does not include it inside the box. Also, for video to be activated, there is a button on the drone that starts and stops the camera, so be sure to do that if you want to take a video.

Also, it is important to remember turning off the camera before unplugging the battery or your video file will get corrupted, and you won’t be able to recover it.

If you are interested in performing some flips and rolls, this drone can do it as well.

Flight test and responsiveness

This little drone has been for a while in the market and it continues to amaze more and more people.

In terms of responsiveness, it really behaves like you would expect, there are no problems with that. Also, switching between speed modes is possible, and while the drone is fast already in speed mode 1, once you get to the expert level this is a super fun and exciting drone to fly.

Doing flips can be a bit tricky since it is done with a movement of the joystick that sometimes may not result in a flip. Having said this, it would be better if this drone had a button to do that, yet that is not a big problem.

Overall, performance is really good, and I think that is why this drone has been around so much time and people continue to like it.

What are current customers saying about it?

Here is an excerpt of a verified purchase one of the almost 1,800 reviews this item has on Amazon.

I was happy to start with a take off and a landing a few times. I wanted to a get a feel for the controls, so I flew low and slow. With patience, the X4 is very stable and easy to control. I recommend learning in a large room and learn to calibrate and use the trim controls. Read more…

Any downsides?

In the spirit of transparency, I also like to include negative aspects of the items I review, especially if these are recurrent among customers.

First, I mentioned that flips and rolls may be a bit tricky due to how these are commanded from the transmitter, and while that is not a big issue, I would definitely like to see something simpler for users.

The button to activate the camera is another thing I know many people may not like, I actually don’t and that is because most drones control video from the transmitter, and that means you don’t have to land the thing, yet this drone has to be landed to activate the camera.

Another downside of this is that it only can record video, but photos cannot be taken, and again, that could change if camera was controlled from the transmitter.

Now, I have to say something… this is actually an old model of the Hubsan drone, as there is a newer version that actually fixes these issues which is the Hubsan X4 H107C+ model.

Check it out here.

I also found a customer saying this drone’s gyro goes faulty after a week or so. He also claims that a simple Google search pulls dozens of examples.

I did the Google search and could not find this, and also, it is important to note that he never says this happened to his drone, he only says he learned about this defect (in some way) and that is why he downgraded his rating.

Other people complain as well about receiving a different thing from what they ordered, yet this is a very small fraction of the reviews on this drone.

My recommendation as always is to get your drone from a well-established retailer, and that is why I recommend Amazon. If you get a faulty gadget or your order is not what you asked for, simply send it back and get a refund.

Conclusion on the Hubsan X4 H107C mini drone

All in all, this is a perfect gadget for a beginner pilot. Should you crash or fly like a pro, the Hubsan X4 H107C drone is the right fit for anyone looking to get started with drones.

Potensic A20 Nano Drone

Potensic A20 Nano Drone

The Potensic A20 Nano drone is another quadcopter that will bring you hours and hours of fun. This little gadget comes in several colors and presentations, so be sure to pick the one you like the most.

Beginner or seasoned pilots can enjoy this drone since it comes with a 3-speed mode, designed to challenge your piloting skills at max.

Drone technology is evolving every day, and features that you can find in drones in the 200 dollar range, are now present in models such as the A20.

  • One-key takeoff and landing: Statistically, most beginners crahs their drone while taking off or landing. The one-key takeoff and landing functionality will help you avoid this.
  • Headless mode: A functionality that helps pilots have better control over the drone. Very useful when the drone is far from the pilot.
  • Altitude hold: This feature allows the drone to hover over a place when releasing the two joysticks of the transmitter. Altitude hold comes very handy for taking amazing aerial photography. Unfortunately, this drone does not have a camera, yet hovering the drone is pretty cool itself.

Flight test and responsiveness

One of the first things you notice when starting this drone is that it is super quiet. A very solid sound but very low as well.

Like I previously said it is for indoors use, but if you want to take it outside, you’ll have to use the 3rd speed mode so that it can handle a bit better the wind. By no means I’m saying this drone will perform great outside with the 3rd speed mode on, I’m only suggesting you’ll need it, yet keep in mind that wind can easily drag it given its size.

Having said that, I have to mention this is a very fun flyer and that it responds very well to commands from the transmitter.

Expanding a little bit more on the flight rates or speed modes, the 1st one is a bit slow, great for beginners, but not necessarily exciting for seasoned pilots.

However, as the speed modes are increased, this drone flies faster and controlling it is harder and more exciting.

What are real owners thinking of this nano drone?

This is the best “mini-drone” (quadcopter) in its class out of three we have tried, and the first one that we felt worthy of repurchasing for family gatherings, so the kids don’t have to share. No camera on something this small of course. Read more…

Are negative reviews here?

Probably the only thing I noticed is that the battery compartment is a bit hard to close because of the cables. Other than that, I think this drone does what it says.

Nothing recurrent in terms of customer reviews, although some people are reporting their unit stopped working due to burned motors or faulty gadgets.

This is just a small fraction of the almost 1000 reviews for this gadget, yet it is probable you could go through something like this.

If that is the case, don’t sweat it that much and simply ask for a refund. If you are a drones fan, you know this is not the last drone you’ll get, and if you had enough of drones, then you still had fun and enjoyed with a very cheap gadget, and best of all, in the end, you’ll get a refund.

Final words on the Potensic A20 nano drone

Potensic is another big name among drones’ enthusiasts. The features available on this drone are proof of that, and that is why the A20 deserves a shot.

Holy Stone HS150 Bolt Bee Mini Racing Drone

Holy Stone HS150 Bolt Bee Mini Racing Drone

Let alone drone beginner pilots, every consumer wants a high-quality product at a super affordable price, right? Well, that is what Holy Stone drones are all about. This is a great brand for drones, and people recognize the value of their business with them.

Holy Stone’s business strategy is simple: Performance at affordable prices!

The HS150 drone is proof of this, because if performance at a low price is your thing, this drone is for you.

This mini drone is a racer one, meaning that it has powerful brushed (while brushed motors are not the ideal for racers, remember I previously said these are mostly toy drones) motors that allow it to speed up to 50Km/h in seconds.

With such motors, the fun is never over, and that is why 3D flips are part of what this drone is able to do.

Inside the box you’ll find two modular batteries, which means they can be swapped without having to disconnect any cables. Just plug and play!

This drone is also equipped with a headless mode to change the front side of the drone to match the front side of the transmitter. This is especially useful when the drone is far and the “nose” of the drone (the front side) is hard to identify.

The secret however with a headless mode is that you must not move while the drone moves, otherwise the front side will move, and the thing will crash!

Also, any racer needs to be stable while flying, and that is why a 6-axis gyro system is embedded in this drone for stable flight.

Flight test and responsiveness

Alright so time to see if this quad holds to its claims.

The first thing I noticed about it while flying, is that brushed motors really behave very well on this drone. I’m pretty sure you know that brushless motors are the industry preferred ones for racers, but the HS150 drone is really at the edge of toy-grade and beginner RC quads.

Also, it has no altitude hold mode, which makes it a bit challenging but at the same time more fun to fly. The throttle stick does not hold itself on the transmitter and thus you have to control the altitude on your own.

In terms of responsiveness, this drone is very good, it actually responds to commands at far distances, and while the flight range is not that high, you do get to put a bit of a distance between you and the drone and thus enjoy seeing it from the distance.

Flips and rolls are not a problem and are quite fast actually, so again, a drone that will challenge your skills as a pilot.

Speaking about speed, the transmitter has a knob on the up-right corner that will allow you to switch between speed modes, and again, the highest level is super fun and exciting, since the drone only gets faster that what it already is.

Definitely a drone that is engineered for the ones wanting to step up their piloting skills. This one as well can be flown outdoors, as it handles wind nicely and smoothly thanks to the power of their motors.

What comes inside the box?

  • 1x HS150 Bolt Bee Racing Quadcopter
  • 1x 2.4GHz Controller
  • 2x 3.7V 600mAh Batteries with 1 Charging Cable
  • 4x Propeller Guards
  • 8X Spare Propellers with 1 Propellers Crowbar
  • 2X Landing Mats
  • 4X Screws for drone with 1 Screwdriver
  • 1x Notebook for recording your flights
  • 1x Instruction Manual

What are people saying about this drone?

I cannot count how many times I damaged my $350 racing drone just learning the basic mechanics of drone flight. The “Bolt Bee” is perfectly suited to this task at one-seventh the price. Read more…

Any negatives?

Probably what I’d like to see on this drone is a camera, it does not come with one, and it would be perfect to get the FPV feature so we can see everything from its perspective. However, Holy Stone does not advertise this model with a camera, so I think it is not a downside but more like a wish on my end.

However, what is a bit annoying is a constant beep that can be heard when low battery. The transmitter is constantly beeping, and I think a visual alarm could be best, yet this does not affect the performance of the drone.

In terms of reviews, while there are people reporting faulty drones, it doesn’t seem to be a recurrent fail. What is most, all of them are saying they sent back the drone and got a full refund, so not much to worry on that end.

Last words on the Holy Stone HS150 Bolt Bee

For the price you pay and considering there is zero risk of being scammed (if you buy from a well-established retailer), this drone deserves your attention. A racer drone is a rare thing, and more than often an expensive gadget, so I feel confident when I say that if speed is what you want, go for this drone.

Holy Stone HS190 Foldable Nano Drone

Holy Stone HS190 Foldable Nano Drone

Another great Holy Stone drone in the list. It is the time of the HS190 nano drone. Let’s see what it got!

First of all, it is a pocket-size, foldable nano drone, which means this drone is all about portability, you can take it with you very easily. It isn’t just foldable, it actually fits inside its transmitter and that is where it can be stored.

Going further, this little gadget has altitude hold and headless mode to help beginner pilots have a better control over it. Also, it can do 3D flips to impress your friends with some aerobatics.

It also comes with a one-key takeoff and landing feature that will make your life as a pilot a lot easier. Plus, I’m not sure if I already mentioned this but most crashes occur when taking off or landing, especially for beginners, so it is nice to have this type of feature available to avoid crashes. You can certainly land the drone on your own by simply decreasing throttle.

With drones these size, it can be hard to see them at a distance, even indoors. This is why a one key return home function is also useful, and this drone comes with one.

Flight test and responsiveness

Alright, the moment of the truth!

I’ve already said these Holy Stone drones are fantastic and really fun to fly, and well.. what I’m about to report is not much different.

First of all, the drone while small in size, is actually pretty solid, and like I said, it actually fits inside the transmitter, so this is pretty impressive and convenient as I think that less is more.

Also, charging it can be done via a cable inside the transmitter or using a provided USB cable. The battery is not removable, so you have to stop the drone while charging.

During flight the HS190 behaved very well, it is definitely an indoors quadcopter and it comes with 3-speed modes to challenge your piloting skills. I have to report that 2nd and 3rd speed are pretty much the same, and when you feel a difference in operation is by switching from 1st to 2nd.

All the features advertised are available. The transmitter comes labeled to help the pilot understand it a bit more, since is not that intuitive at the beginning, yet getting used to it is not hard once you start flying.

I have to say I was impressed with how this drone handles 3D flips, as it can do flips in all 4 directions and I didn’t see a loss in altitude while flipping, which is something I’ve seen other drones do. Not that it is bad, but you can tell there is a loss of voltage on those other drones when doing flips, not the case of the Holy Stone HS190.

Definitely a strong, fast, little gadget for indoors use that is enough to keep you busy and entertained for a while.

What is inside the box?

  • HS190 Quadcopter x1
  • 2.4GHz Controller x1
  • Spare Propellers x4
  • Propellers Guards x4
  • Propellers Crowbar x4
  • USB Charger x1
  • Screwdriver x1
  • User Manual x1

What are current customers saying about it?

I am finding that Holy Stone’s HS series drones are a lot better than their F series drones. I am also finding that the HS190 flies and handles way better than the fragile Eachine nano quadcopters I have had. This drone has stable altitude hold and responds readily to the controller. I finally have a beginner drone where I can actually perform/practice funnels and bank turns. Read more…

Any downsides?

You can’t expect much of these nano drones, realistically speaking, first because of the size and second because of the price, but I wish this one had a removable battery, that way you could continue flying with a spare battery while charing the other one. Not necessarily a downside, but more like a wish on my end.

About customer comments, the most sounding comment is relative to faulty units right out of the box or after a few uses. While this happens even with iPhones, I strongly suggest to buy it from Amazon or other well established retailer so you ask for a full refund if needed. Otherwise you may not be able to do that.

Final comments on the HS190

I like that it is portable and the drone seems pretty solid to me. Controls may not be that intuitive at first but definitely user friendly and easy to learn. The speed modes are decent enough to have fun with it after you start to get the feel of how a drone flies and durability is good to endure crashes. Again, use it indoors only, as wind could take it away and crashes may be more severe.

All in all, I think this is a great gadget to have fun with.

The Holy Stone HS210 Nano Quadcopter

Holy Stone HS210 Mini Drone

The Holy Stone HS210 nano drone is one of the best gadgets you can get right now. Don’t believe me, believe the more than 500 customer ratings it has, with more than 60% of these being a 5-star rating.

If you’ve been looking for a drone you can enjoy with your kids at home, the HS210 is perfect for that.

Auto hovering and 3D flips are possible with this drone. Also, its headless mode helps you keep the right direction and not lose track of it, a great feature for beginner pilots.

This drone comes with 3 batteries inside the package, to keep it longer in the air. And in case the battery is running low, this Holy Stone drone comes equipped with a low power alarm that will tell you when it’s time to go home.

Flight test and responsiveness

The first time I saw this drone I knew it was a winner, and that is why I want to share with you more details on what is being said about it.

First of all, this drone is for indoors use only. Again, lots of people want to take it outside and that is fine, but this drone is designed really for indoors use.

However, if outdoors is your thing and you have to do it, here are a few recommendations.

  • Don’t fly in extreme weather. This drone handles slight wind with its 3rd speed mode and it can sometimes struggle to do it.
  • Wind will easily drag it as it is very light weight.
  • Battery will last less outdoors because the motors will deal with more adversity.

However, if indoors is where you plan to fly, then this is a great little gadget that will respond very well to the commands from the transmitter.

All in all, it has 3-speed modes, which take it from slow to fast with just the push of a button. Something that is great from this Holy Stone drone is that transmitter is labeled, so a great help for beginner pilots.

Definitely a fun gadget to enjoy when weather is bad or when you simply want to stay at home.

What are the comments from real owners of the HS210?

Holy Stone HS210. This little drone is amazing. Although still a beginner, I have two other mini/micro drones, but this is easily the best of the three. The other two were also more expensive.
The altitude hold function on the HS210 is unbelievable. This thing hovers in mid-air like its sitting still on a solid surface. This makes it great for getting a feel for the controls, which are very responsive, but with Speed 1 (HS210 has 3 speeds) it is very easy to control. Read more…

What about negative reviews?

Some people are reporting faulty transmitters. That is, the drone turns on, but the transmitter won’t.

I have seen this with other drones and RC helicopters I have, and unfortunately it is something that in my opinion you should not try to fix (I did it and it is really hard).

It is sad to know this about this drone, yet the good news is the amazing customer service Holy Stone has and that you can rest assured you’ll be backed by them if you happen to receive a defective unit.

Last comments on the Holy Stone HS210

This is really a great drone for kids and to have fun with everybody inside the house, perfect for those rainy days.

If you feel this is the drone for you, be sure to act quick as this is one of the top recommended drones from Amazon and they tend to quickly disappear.

Blade Nano QX Mini Drone

Blade Nano QX Mini Drone

Blade is another big brand in terms of RC gadgets, they manufacture superb quality gadgets and most of their technology is patented and exclusive of their devices.

The Nano QX reaches stabilization using Blade’s SAFE™ technology, which not only makes the drone safe to fly, but also makes it more agile.

Its frame is light weight yet durable and resistant to crashes. Very small drone that can easily fly indoors with no problem.

This drone comes equipped with potent brushed motors that will provide a powerful and smooth lift. While brushed motors are not recommended for advanced drones, they are perfect (and affordable) for drones in this size category.

Flight test and responsiveness

Like mentioned before, the Blade Nano QX comes with some proprietary technology called SAFE™. One could think this is more a marketing thing intended to attract customers, yet I want to share with you my discovering: This is indeed very cool tech that keeps this drone flying very stable in the air.

That is not all, but actually, this drone moves very gently through the air, and it really looks amazing when it does this. I personally think it is incredible how it does it.

Two modes of flight available, agility and stability. The first is intended to more aggressive movements and aerobatics, while the stability one is more for slow and stable flight.

Something I want to highlight about this drone is that safety guards are above the propellers and the body of the drone, so even if it touches the ceiling, it won’t stop flying because the guards will keep props safe. This is a small yet clever detail that makes the difference with this quad.

Response is instantaneous, very sharp and absolutely amazing. You might think I’m exaggerating here but this drone’s tech is definitely something else.

What comes inside the box?

  • Blade Nano QX Drone
  • Yellow and green canopies with sharp Nano QX graphics.
  • Assortment of extra rotor blades.
  • MLP4DSM 4-channel DSMX transmitter (RTF Version includes Transmitter, BNF version does not) with batteries.
  • E-flite 1S 3.7V 150mAh 25C Li-Po Battery.
  • USB Li-Po battery charger.

What customers say?

Great beginners’ drone!

I received the quadcopter on time without any shipping problems from Amazon Prime. The box includes everything you see on the webpage and an extra battery. This machine is easy to fly and has amazing flight characteristics for such a small drone. In no time I was able to hover and maneuver in a small area without crashing. Read more…

What about negatives?

Some people reported faulty motors either at arrival or after a while using it. This is not the general comment, but that is the fail I found from researching among consumers.

All of them also reported on getting a refund, so not much to worry about here.

Final comments on the Blade QX Nano

Blade really pushes the limits of the gadgets they create, they are constantly innovating, and every year new versions of their drones and helicopters see the light. The SAFE technology is a great way to say they are here to stay. The Blade QX is just a result of that work culture, and if you want to try a great gadget, then be sure to get it before it runs out.

Potensic A30W FPV Drone with Camera

Potensic A30W FPV Drone

The Potensic A30W is one of the highest rated (and sold) drones in Amazon. This is not a coincidence, because it is one of the most complete drones in the entire list.

It is rare to see these small drones having a camera, but the A30 comes with an HD one embedded. Like I previously said, these drones are a bit limited in terms of their photo and video capabilities, yet the A30 can take high quality video and photos.

Also, FPV (First Person View) is possible with the A30. This means it can live-stream video right to your smartphone while flying. Imagine how cool is that for a drone like this.

Being a bit bigger than the A20W, it is also more stable. Something else that makes this drone a special one, is its custom flight route feature. Just draw a flight path on the screen of your smart phone and the drone will follow.

By the way, it can be controlled using an Android or IOS device using an app.

This drone is perfect for kids as well since it has 360˚protective guards around the propellers, making it a very safe gadget for everyone at home.

Other great features this drone includes are alarm protection, one-key start and landing, and altitude hold, which are perfect to help the beginner pilot to ease the learning curve.

Flight test and responsiveness

Ok well, this drone is still a good one among the best mini and nano drones I’m reviewing here. The video you can get from it is quite nice and it is great to have the FPV experience.

Definitely an indoors flier, if you take it outdoors chances are, you’ll experience signal issues, due to the fact that this drone is not for outdoors.

Inside it works really well, the flight is stable but a bit slow. Perfect for beginners but not as exciting for seasoned pilots. The 3-speed modes make it a bit faster as you move up, but don’t expect anything very fast.

Overall, I’m happy with its performance and think this is a great little flier that beginner can have fun with.

What are customers saying about it?

Love my new Blue A30W!! Super cute mini drone, very easy to calibrate and fly. Great for beginners. The only downside is no lights, Overall the A30W is a GREAT drone! Read more…

Any downsides?

The speed may be not necessarily a downside but something that could disappoint seasoned pilots, so just be aware of this if you are interested in this drone.

In terms of customer reviews, besides having no lights like the previous review says, people are talking about faulty devices either when they first received them or after a while of having it.

Another person mentioned that after a while of storing the drone, it wouldn’t turn on, which got my attention because this could be due to the battery and not the drone. For storage, it is recommended to let batteries at half of their power, so they don’t fully discharge with time. This just makes them useless.

Either way, with a faulty device upon arrival, you can send it back and ask for a full refund.

Conclusion on the Potensic A30

Really a great drone and a blast of fun. Also, for the money you pay for it and the zero risk of being scammed, I’d say this is one of the most advanced drones presented in a simple form for beginners. Definitely worth a shot.

The Syma X22W Mini Drone

The Syma X22W Mini Drone

We have been talking about big drone brands during the whole post, and this one is another well-established name that you want to remember. Syma was one of the first brands to incorporate most of what big drones such as the DJI Phantom model had, into cheaper but high-quality models. Things like headless mode, auto landing and FPV functions were added by Syma to the world of affordable drones.

I won’t lie saying they were the first ones (because I don’t know), but they definitely helped shape the market of beginner drones with such innovations.

The Syma X22W mini drone is not just a result of Syma shaping the market, but actually this drone is an evolved version of previous models and that is why it gained great popularity among drone lovers.

Starting with the one key takeoff and landing button, this drone will ease your days as a beginner hobbyist. The headless mode can help to simplify the controls of the drone, to not confuse directions if the drone turns (yaw) left or right.

The size of this gadget is just a bit larger than your open palm, and yet, it is also a powerful device that flies like a champ indoors.

Safety is also guaranteed, since it comes equipped with some protective guards on the propellers to keep everyone safe.

Syma is always pushing the limits of what their drones can do, and this is why this small drone comes with altitude hold mode and draw the path functionalities. The first one will greatly help you with photos and video, and the other will take your drone along the specified route you traced on your smartphone.

Speaking about photos and video, this little flyer comes with an embedded HD camera. The image quality you get is pretty decent. Of course, you are not getting what a Phantom, or a Mavic can give in terms of image quality, but the camera is pretty decent in these devices, so definitely something else to have fun with it.

This gadget also comes with a gravity sensor, or gravity functionality, which allows you to control it using a smartphone like a “steering wheel”.

The way this usually works is by tilting your smartphone to the front, and the drone will move front, if you tilt back a little bit, the drone will move back. The same thing is true for right and left directions.

Flight test and responsiveness

Syma drones tend to be very fun gadgets not only because the many features they have, but also because they hold their claims.

The X22W drone can be controlled either with a smart phone or with the transmitter that is included inside the box.

Both methods will help you control the quadcopter, yet the transmitter will always offer a better control range, and responsiveness overall. If you fly using a smart phone, responsiveness may be a bit slow in some cases.

Pairing the drone with the transmitter is very simple, and the only reason why I say this is because I’ve experimented this process with other drones and it can be really hard and time consuming, but Syma makes it easy for all of us to start having fun in no time.

As for stability, there are no problems at all with this little gadget, in fact, it flies smoothly and effortlessly. You can know it by the sound of the props, it is a very solid sound, meaning that all four props spin at the same speed resulting in a pretty stable flight.

The flight range and flight time are perfect for a mini drone, and if you buy extra batteries you can always decrease the charge period and increase the fun time.

What are customers saying about the Syma X22W?

This is my 3rd Syma drone and by far my favorite. It fits in my palm, has great video quality and with two batteries I can get 18-20 minutes of flight time assuming you don’t do too many flips. I also like the Iron Man red color. Read more…

Any downsides?

I think the slow responsiveness of the drone using the transmitter can be considered as a downside. This comment is also found in some of the customer reviews I read, so I know it’s not an isolated case.

Another issue was that in some cases, the X22W was not able to do continuous 3D flips. This wasn’t always the case but saw that effect and thought it was worth reporting it here.

Faulty units as well were reported, which were sent back for a refund.

Final words on the Syma X22W

All in all, this is a pretty good flyer and a mini drone that will give you countless moments of fun. The extra battery helps on this. I wouldn’t recommend fly outdoors, but some people have tried that and they are happy with the experience.

In my opinion, this is a mini drone designed to fly indoors and that is where it behaves the best.

The Eachine E012 Nano Drone

The Eachine E012 Nano Drone

Eachine is another brand that’s been making a name in the drones industry because they deliver great quality gadgets. The nano drone, E012, is one (if not the) of the smallest drones in this list.

Like I said initially, these are for indoors, if you take it outdoors of course it will take off, but the response will be much different, and that is because of the air, so to keep things where they belong, I recommend flying indoors only.

Continuing with its construction, this is a very solid quadcopter that will endure, and endure, and endure crashes. The propellers have 360-protective guards around propellers, so it is very difficult to hit these or damage them.

The drone does not have an ON/OFF button, so it starts as soon as you plug the battery. This is important because you have to unplug it every time the battery discharges, or you could damage it. This can also cause a fire, in extreme conditions, so make sure you unplug it.

Exploring a bit more the capabilities of this nano drone, it can perform 3D flips with the push of a button. You have to be cautious because it may lose a bit of altitude when doing the flip and that may lead to a crash.

3-speed levels to help you hone your piloting skills, and no camera so you can concentrate on improving as a pilot. This drone is all about flying.

The nano Eachine drone has a one key return button, which should help you get it back with little effort. The tricky thing here is that I’ve seen people flying outdoors and then complaining about this not working. In reality, wind resistance plays a huge factor with such a small drone, and even indoors this sometimes can be a bit tricky, so treat it with a grain of salt just to make sure you have a good flight experience.

I’ve seen many drones making claims about having headless mode, yet when put at test, controlling them is very hard. Well, this is not the case with this drone, as it has one of the best headless modes I’ve ever seen, and again, the surprising thing is the smallness of technology.

Remember that a headless mode allows the pilot to fix the direction of the drone, regardless of the drone rotation, so this definitely helps beginners.

Flight test and responsiveness

All in all, this drone behaves very good. I’ll be honest, and it is not the case of the nano and mini drones on this list, but for the most part, people struggle to control these drones precisely because they are so small.

Their size and their weight make these drones more vulnerable to external conditions, such as wind, or other objects moving near them. This is why every manufacturer will always recommend these are flown indoors.

Yet people challenge that and fly them outside, which is fine, but not all drones respond well to that.

The good thing is that even outdoors, and with wind close to zero, this drone responds very well. Also, the signal is not lost and the communication between the transmitter and receiver is not a problem.

That is the main reason for me recommending this drone.

What are people saying about this Eachine drone?

This drone is small enough to sit on 2 of my fingers comfortably. The controls are a little confusing at first but after flying a few times you get the hang of it fairly quickly. Read more…

Any negatives?

Over the course of this review I’ve pointed a few things, such as the lack of a power button, which may damage the battery. Also, return to home button may not respond that well outdoors, so just be careful with that.

On the customer reviews side, people complain mostly about the way the battery of this drone is setup, that is, the connector of this drone and the socket to connect it are hard to get together. My suggestion is to first connect the battery and then place it on the battery holder, this will simplify the connection.

Other than that, should you have any problems with faulty units, return the quad for a full refund.

Final words on the Eachine E012 nano drone

Summarizing all the information we have here, I think this is one of the smallest yet most powerful and high performing drones I have reviewed. The controls are well made, and the headless mode is super useful with a drone as small as this.

Also, flight test was super successful indoors, which is where this drone belongs, and on the outside, it wasn’t that terrible, yet the wind can and will be a factor for it. Even the return to home difficulty I saw outdoors is not much of a problem because you can always land the drone using the throttle control.

If you want to experiment how is to fly a such a small drone and have fun at the same time, I think this is the right way to do it.

The Helifar H803 Mini Drone

The Helifar H803 Mini Drone

Alright, so it’s time to check one of the most fun nano drones I’ve ever seen. The Helifar H803. To be honest, this is the first time I review something from Helifar, but this mini drone seems to have good reputation on Amazon, and it came as one of 10th drone for my list, so… let’s see what it got!

Probably the most remarkable feature of this drone is its collision avoidance. This feature helps the drone do precisely that, it really avoids obstacles by using infrared sensors that are located at the bottom, and on each side of the drone, but not at the top.

This feature is actually pretty fun, and I have to say it works pretty well. I think the only downside of it is that the drone tends to go high a little bit and since you are not using a transmitter is hard, but fun, to get used to this mode.

Also, being these infrared sensors, it is important to say that if you try to use this outdoors, you might see it not responding very well, since infrared sensors can be blocked by light, in fact, even indoors if you fly close to a source of light the responsiveness may be not that well.

Having said this, the Helifar H803 drone is great at avoiding obstacles, and lots of fun to fly in this mode.

In the same tone, the drone can be turned on either by shaking it up and down or by throwing it away. The drone turns on the motors and starts flying on its own.

There is also a transmitter included inside the box, and as you can expect, the control is much better with it than with the obstacle avoidance mode.

At the size of this drone, believe it or not, it is equipped with a barometer, which works like a charm for altitude hold.

In order to help the beginner pilot, headless mode is also available, which will aid with direction control.

Flight test and responsiveness

This little flier is a fantastic drone, it is very responsive and super fun to operate. In terms of speed, do not expect too much of it, since it is definitely a slow flier, even at the highest speed mode it has, it is quite slow. This makes it very good for beginners, but a seasoned pilot may not find it that exciting.

That may not be a problem, as the obstacle avoidance mode compensates for this. It is super fun and it is impressive how accurate it is to avoid obstacles. Also, this mode allows you to move it with your bare hands.

I know what you are thinking: what about safety? Well, one of the amazing features of this drone is that as soon as something touches the spinning propellers, these stop, just like that. Also, keep in mind this drone comes with 360 protective guards around the propellers, so no parts are exposed for someone to get hurt. Safety is definitely not at risk here.

What comes inside the box?

  • Helifar H803 Drone x1
  • Remoter Controller x1
  • Battery x2
  • Screwdriver x1
  • Pair of Propeller x2
  • USB Charging Cable x1
  • Propeller Disassembly Tool x1
  • User Manual x3

What are people saying about this drone?

My H803 came with two 300mAh batteries and flies 6+ min. IR object avoidance can be enabled and disabled in flight by the long press of a button. The H803 auto-calibrates on startup so place it on a level surface. The auto altitude works well, and you can shake to start & throw to launch. Read more…

Any negatives?

Not precisely a negative, is just that this drone is definitely a slow flyer, which makes it perfect for beginners, but a seasoned pilot may not find it that exciting.

In terms of negative customer reviews, there are very few comments, yet these said they received faulty units, which in all honesty is something that will happen with every single product, but as long as you buy from a good retailer, you should not have any problems with getting a refund.

Final words on the Helifar H803

All in all, I think this is a very fun and interesting gadget. The obstacle avoidance functionality is something that you don’t see in small or cheap drones, but this one has it and while it is pretty basic, it does the job as long as you operate indoors.

Having said this, I can definitely recommend you get yours and start having fun with it. I’m pretty sure you won’t regret it.

Final thoughts on the best mini and nano drones’ reviews

Well I have to say it’s been exciting to create this page and learn a lot about all these mini and nano drones, and then share that learning with you.

Right now, we have a list of 10 (I may add more) different drones here that offer a variety of features for every type of hobbyist out there.

However, nothing I say here matters if you the reader, can’t find this information interesting or useful, and if this information is useful, then the second thing needs to happen is for you to take action.

I understand that drones can be intimidating but trust me on this, that is only because most people think drones are expensive and sophisticated gadgets that can break very easily, and the craziest thing is that it doesn’t matter if that is true or not, what matters in the end is how you feel about drones.

Even a bulldozer can be broken and delicate if operated without training, so your goal should be to get rid of that thought that makes you feel a bit intimidated about drones, and I can’t think of a better way to do this than with mini and/or nano drones.

This is why I created this list and I really hope you find it useful.

Let me know if there is something I missed or if there is any comment you have about this. Last but not least, it’d be amazing for me if you share this post with your friends and contacts via social media.

Till the next one and happy flying!
