Even if you are a beginner in the world of RC helicopters, I think you still want to get something that is high quality and that will allow you to have fun and learn more about these gadgets at the same time. This is why I consider fair to give you my take in terms of finding the best RC helicopters, and not just recommend any products that may not pass the test of the beginner. This is why in this article I want to formally introduce you to Blade RC Helicopters, a top brand that is having lots of great ideas every time, and that year after year, keep updating their product lines so that we can have the best of the best at very affordable prices.
What is Blade in terms of RC helicopters?
Blade RC helicopters are some of the most popular gadgets you can find in the world of RC aviation gadgets. They are a true authority in terms of designing and producing great devices for all levels of pilots. They recently updated their website and now you can select the products from a friendly navigation menu that tells you which products are for which level of expertise. So I really think this is pretty useful for all of us.
You can’t go wrong with Blade, they are good not just because of their products, but because of the many experts that work with them, their customer service is really focused on helping clients with their inquiries, and you can call the company at any time in case you need answers to your questions.
Something else that you have to know about this company is that they have plenty of experience doing what they do. They’ve been in business since 1985 (the same year I was born), and they distribute their products through their chain of retail stores known as Horizon Hobby. They are one of the most popular wholesale RC distributors in North America, however, they have World Wide presence since they have offices in France, United Kingdom, Germany, and China.
We are talking about a big corporation that has specialized in bringing fun to the world. And trust me, they are very good at doing this. A Blade RC helicopter is not just built to last, but it also is designed with the end user in mind. I’ve heard that it’s typical that Horizon Hobby employees play with the RC helis before they are launched, because they want to make sure that each model performs well not just in a controlled quality test in the manufacturing process, but also at a very typical situation, like being in front of your desk and pulling your RC heli to get some rest and have a bit of fun.
This is how natural they want you to feel the experience of flying a Blade RC helicopter, and this is why I think they’ve achieved great results since the moment they started.
Why to choose a Blade RC helicopter?
Probably you think I’ve said everything you need to know about Blade RC helis, but the story can’t be complete until we speak about their products, and the reasons why they are so popular around the world.
The first thing we have to say is that Blade is not afraid of building high quality devices, and by this I mean that they strive to develop products that even some of the most experienced pilots can use and critique. Many of the companies that offer RC helicopters for beginners stay at that level, but when you need to move to the next step, they don’t have something else to challenge you. This is not the case with Blade, because they’re always in the look for the next great gadget that will please their most demanding fans.
Among the many things I could mention (and I’m sure you’ll discover if you get a Blade RC helicopter) about these devices, I like the fact that they offer what they call BNF (bind and fly) versions of their helis. These are helis that are sold without a transmitter inside the box, but that can be controlled with a compatible transmitter that you already have. This is interesting because the BNF versions are cheaper than the ones that are sold with the transmitter included, and if you actually invested in a good transmitter in the past (something I really recommend you to do) you can use that to control your new gadget from Blade.
Blade also works a lot in developing new ideas and bringing those to life in the form of new enhancements to their devices. Something that they now include in most of their helis, is a central control unit, which has all the components that are required to have fun with their gadgets. This also decreases costs because of the miniaturization of the electronics, and also helps with the aerodynamics of the design since the weight is less, and the consumption of the battery is more efficient.
Another great piece of technology they use is their Spektrum™ DSM2® technology, which avoids interference between the transmitter and the receiver, a feature that is rarely seen in low-priced helis, but that Blade has decided to incorporate to most of their products.
Also I want to talk a bit about the AS3X stabilization system that they now use to give superb stability to their products. I’ve said before that stability is very important when selecting an RC helicopter, and the AS3X stabilization system from Blade was developed so that you have the maximum control over your gadget. In short, the AS3X system can make a small RC heli as stable as a big one.
And last but not least, they develop affordable and reliable gadgets that people can use to have fun and hone their piloting skills.
What are Blade’s most popular products?
This is my favorite part of the post, where I speak about the helicopters. Let me present you some great options that you can consider if you’ve been thinking in getting a gadget from Blade.
Blade CX2 RTF
This is a coaxial helicopter that is perfect for beginners. The RTF (ready to fly) version of the heli is great if you don’t have another compatible transmitter, but if you do you can get the BNF version and save a bit of money. A great looking helicopter that will surely give you tons of fun.
As I previously mentioned, it comes with a built in 3-in-1 unit that will take care of everything. The Spektrum™ technology is present to ensure you won’t experience any interference issues, and the coaxial main rotor blades will allow you to have a smooth and stable flight.
Everything you need to start having fun once you get the package is inside the box, even the transmitter batteries, which in most cases, are not included.
Blade mCX RTF
This is another coaxial Blade RC helicopter that will ensure you a smooth and stable flight experience. It’s designed for the beginner, don’t tell them I told you that the price is ridiculously low, especially if you consider the quality of this wonderful device.
Everything you need to have fun with it comes inside the box. The interference won’t be an issues since the Spektrum™ technology is present here.
This is a small helicopter that is better for indoors, and if you try to have fun with it outside the house, consider that even a slight breeze of wind can shake it a little bit and cause it to crash. Don’t let this scares you, these helis are built to last, but for the most part, you want to avoid crashes at all costs.
Blade 120 SR RTF
This is a perfect next helicopter for those of you who already mastered the beginners’ level. This is not a coaxial heli, which means that stability is a bit harder to achieve, but don’t worry, that’s part of the fun.
The RTF version comes with everything you need to fly, and it’s pre-assembled completely so that you don’t have any issues with that.
As always, interference is not a problem, and I guarantee you’ll have fun with this amazing device.
Blade mCP X BL BNF
I won’t lie to you. This is my favorite heli of them all. It’s not for a beginner, nor an intermediate pilot. In order to fully enjoy it, you have to have some experience flying these devices. This doesn’t mean that you need years of practice, you can learn to control this heli in weeks, and sometimes days.
I’ve already said this before on my site, this heli is a beast. It allows you to do 3D flying and amazing aerobatics. This heli has only one set of main rotor blades, and comes with no fly bar, which makes things a bit more interesting. This is why this heli needs a bit more of practice.
The only available version is the BNF, since by now you may have a compatible transmitter to control it. Fun is guaranteed with this gadget, and even when it is a bit small, make no mistake, this is not a toy or a beginners’ series Blade RC helicopter.
Blade 450 X BNF
Let’s face it, most of us would love to pilot a big size or scale RC helicopter, we’ve all seen those videos on YouTube and they simply look awesome. This is why the Blade 450 X will charm you. This is one of the biggest helicopters from Blade. It comes fully assembled and flight tested to ensure you’ll have a great experience with it. Again, this is for an expert pilot, so make sure you have honed your skills before attempting to fly this beauty.
It has no fly bar and only one set of main rotor blades, it’s built to last, and you can get pretty much crazy with it, since it is a big size (25.8 inches or 655 millimeters) helicopter that is designed for the outdoors.
Something I really like about this heli is the design of the rotor mechanism, you can definitely see the engineering work that Blade adds here. Lots of moving parts, but everything working harmonically to produce a beautiful flight experience.
What is your favorite Blade RC helicopter?
So there you go, that is my take about Blade RC helicopters, and those are some of the most popular models from Blade.
