The more RC helicopters I study and research the more I know that each one is completely different to all the others. For most people, the main difference between RC helis is based on the size, and they assume that just because it’s bigger it’s better, however, I have to tell you something: this is not always the case. It is true that RC helis behave different from one size to another, but the reality is that size is just a fraction of what you want to look at if you really want to get the best RC helicopter for you. Today I have great example of this, and I’ll prove my point during this review. Let me introduce you to the V911 helicopter, the living proof that not all micro or small helis are toy-grade ones.
What is important to know about the Micro helicopter V911?
If you’ve been reading my site and watching my videos, you know that each gadget has something that makes it special and different from the others. There are plenty of options on the market right now, but I think it’s important that you know what to look for when you stare at one of these devices.
RC helicopters can be a bit tricky if you don’t know anything about them, the truth is that even if you ask at a retail store, unless these are trained and certified hobbyists, chances are you’ll be fooled (I speak from experience); and don’t get me wrong here, most of the times this happens because people don’t know anything about the products they sell, and they end up lying people, but not because they know that they’re intentionally lying.
This is why I consider important to share as much as I know about each heli, and hopefully help you to make an informed decision.
If you’ve been looking for a nice looking heli that behaves well both inside and outside, the V911 could be just what you’ve been looking for, and here I want to give you a full and clear explanation of what this heli is about.
- Quality of the device
- Expertise level
- The transmitter technology
- In/out flyer
What does quality means in RC helicopters?
One of the first things is noticeable when picking an RC helicopter is the construction of the device. This tells us a lot about the heli. This is only my experience, but I get to know if a heli is high quality or not by first looking at the brand or reviews of it. If I can find good references online about this device, then I check that out from my list. Second, I look at the way the heli was assembled. Most respected RC helis companies assemble their gadgets using screws and mobile parts that were engineered. No flash is present in the plastic parts, and more than often, the parts are not painted (except for the canopy and the decorations of the device), their just the color they naturally are. Also, if I get to touch the model (you can’t do this online, but you can check at the mall and see if the model you want is there, by the way, don’t buy it there, you could spend more money than if you get it online.), and I detect some loose or wiggling components, then I don’t buy it, because components should be well aligned, synced, and tight.
This is the case of the V911 heli, you can find lots of great reviews online about this device, and you don’t need to touch it physically to know that the construction of this gadget is high quality. If you look for pictures online, you can clearly see this heli is built to last. The parts are properly assembled and it’s obvious that a proper design is behind all the construction. Something else is important to mention about this model are the main rotor blades, they are flexible and made to last. The reason why these are flexible and can be twisted is to make them less fragile. If they were more rigid, they would break at the first crash, but since these are flexible and strong, they can withstand more crashes without breaking.
By the way, you can check the improved version 2 of this gadget, which comes with a better design for the battery compartment. Also, notice that the battery from version 1 will not fit in version 2, so only buy the batteries for each model accordingly. And remember what I always say, if you buy your heli, also buy a set of spare parts. In this case, you get a set of main and tail rotor blades spares inside the box, but I really recommend you to get the full set of spare parts here, here, or here.
An extra positive point about the quality of this device is the way the communication between the transmitting and receiving units is accomplished. The V911 helicopter uses a 2.4GHz frequency to communicate, which in practical terms means interference-free. Some helis use poorly designed communication systems to transmit the signal and more than often this is lost, which can lead to malfunction of the device and a potential crash, but if you’re using a 2.4GHz system to do this, you don’t have to worry at all, because this technology assures you’ll always be in control of your helicopter.
The Expertise level – Are you ready for this?
Flying RC helicopters is not like driving the toy-grade RC cars. The more you advance with helis the more you become aware of this. This is why it’s important that you start at the right level with RC helis. If you’re a beginner, without any previous experience flying, then you want to consider something 3 or 3.5 channels. If you already mastered helis such as the S107G from Syma, but still want to move safely in your learning curve, then something 4 channels is a good fit to suit your needs.
You want to remember that the more channels, the more things you have to control on the heli. This makes it more challenging as you progress in the number of channels you can control, but at the same time, the more channels, the more things you can do with the heli.
The V911 copter is a good example of what I’d like to see in a heli for someone moving forward safely on his or her learning curve. It is built to last and made of flexible plastic that will help you withstand crashes, and at the same time, it gives you 4 channels to have fun with it and move up/down, back/forward, left/right, and rotate on the main rotor blade axis, either clock or counter-clockwise.
Single propeller design, what are the implications for stability?
Something that is also important to look at is the stability control of the device. Stability is one of the most important (if not the) factors for flight control. An RC heli that’s not stable won’t fly well at all. Stability in simple words means that if you tell the heli to go left, it should do it without hesitation or delay, and the same goes for all the other directions. If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that in the past I’ve spoken about torque reaction, which is something that affects the stability of the helicopter, and can’t be eliminated because it’s caused by the very design of RC helis. However, it can be controlled.
Some helis control the stability by using a coaxial rotor design, which works great and results in some of the most stable helis in the market, however, the coaxial rotor limits the helicopter in terms of speed and aerobatics. This is when other ways to control the torque reaction come handy. One of the most popular ways to do this is a gyro system, which is a pretty effective built-in electronic component that assists the pilot in this task. The gyro, as you may know, senses the torque reaction produced by the heli and then, in most cases, moves the tail rotor blade on the heli to counteract this effect.
The WL V911 has a single rotor blade design, which is a great next step for someone learning to fly RC helicopters. In this case, you get to control the helicopter’s torque reaction using a built-in gyro system. This is also exciting and you’ll get to notice the difference between a coaxial heli design and the gyro system.
The Micro Helicopter V911 can be flown indoors or outdoors
This is something great about this flying gadget, since you get a 2 in 1, sort of speak, RC heli. Since this is a more powerful device than most beginner RC helis, it can handle slight winds, which means that you can fly it outside the house. Be careful not to exceed the max range of the transmitter which are 26 to 36 meters, something close to 85 to 118 feet.
Also, since this is a truly palm-size helicopter, you can fly it inside the house, which is why I say you get a 2 in 1 device. So be sure to take advantage of it and have fun with your V911 wherever you want.

I have been flying rc helis for many, many years. I have owned dozens and still own several. I mostly fly my 450 trex clones, however, I still love smaller helis for indoor flying during the long, cold winters that we have here in the mountains and for a change of pace from 450 size helis.
The v911 is EXCEPTIONAL in every way. I cannot find any flaws with this heli.
I live above 8000′ and it still has power to spare.
The build quality is very good.
The supplied controller is also very good and even has dual rates.
I consistently get 5 minute flight times.
When I do fly it outside, I regularly fly it in winds to 5-6 mph and it is a blast and controllable.
Inside, the v911 flys just fine also.
The heli is very stable in flight and hovers well.
I liked this heli so much that I ordered another one just like it.
I have almost 100 flights on mine and all is still well. I have not crashed it but I’d bet that it is durable due to the light weight.
As far as small helis, I own a Blade MSR and Blade SR 120 also. This heli is 10 times more heli than the Blades. It does everything better and costs almost nothing.
I believe the v911 is stable enough for a total newbie to learn to fly skipping coax helis altogether.
If you have ever wanted an rc heli buy the v911 NOW!
In the spirit of transparency, I always like to report any issue I find about helicopters when doing my research, I’m happy to say that I found only a small amount of negative comments compared with the vast majority of positive reviews, however, here is what people have to say about it.
People are reporting two main issues: broken helicopter parts when crashing and helis not responding to the transmitter. However, any serious pilot knows that these things happen, and that is why I always recommend to be prepared with a set of spare parts, however, if you perceive this as a complete waste of money, you can always ask for a full refund of your money if you’re not completely satisfied with your purchase, however, this implicates that you bought your heli from the right source.
For the second issue, it’s always recommended to first turn on the transmitter and then the helicopter, thus the two units will sync in the right way, in some cases, the instructions manual includes directions to do this properly. However, should you be unable to get your heli to respond, you can always return the device and ask for a full refund.
Where can I get this RC heli?
This is another important question to answer, if you’re looking to get the WL Toys V911 helicopter. As I previously mentioned, you have to get your heli from the right source or you could be disappointed if something goes wrong. In this case, I always like to go with the big ones, the place where I know I’m making a secured investment.
After comparing a lot of vendors, the best place to get this heli is through Amazon.com, because not only they offer a full money back guarantee, but also, they have one of the most helpful customer service departments I’ve ever seen. The other great thing about them is that your package can apply for free shipping and you save more than with other places.
If you’re ready to start having fun with the V911 helicopter, I invite you to get yours right away. I promise you won’t be disappointed and you’ll have a blast of fun with this little but advanced piece of technology. Also, once you get yours and have a few flights, come back and share your story and lessons learned with us so that more people get to know this device. Last but not least, I invite you to click on the social buttons on this page to help spread the word about this fantastic device.
