Selecting an RC helicopter can be a daunting task if you are doing this for the first time, many people could tell you that the size and the price can tell you a lot of the helicopter that you want to buy, but the reality is that the price of a toy like these is not enough to decide which RC helicopter is best for you; this decision must be made based on the right criteria, otherwise you may end up selecting a toy that would fit your budget but not your expectations. Of course that the price is an important aspect for selecting an RC helicopter, it is better to start with something than not start at all; but the main aspects to select your RC aircraft are beyond of its price. Here I would like to show you what to look for when selecting an RC helicopter, my intention with this article is to provide you with practical and informative data so you can choose the best model for you.
What is important to know about an RC helicopter?
Where will you use it?
The first thing you have to define about your new toy is what is it for? Will you use it indoors or outdoors? Or maybe both? It is very important to define this because there are a lot of models available for you to choose from, and no option is better than the other, but you have to find out how is that you want to play this game. So the first thing that I can tell you is to define your purpose with this toy.
After deciding the intended use of your RC aircraft, it is time to ask yourself what is your experience flying toys like these, if you do not have any experience at all and you just want to have some fun, anything between 1 and 3 channels will suit you good. Three or less channels are for those people who only want to have some fun or are totally newbies; so if you fit in this category you already have a great starting point to decide which helicopter is good for you.
Coaxial or single main rotor blade
There are no more stable helicopters that the coaxial ones, these are called like that because they have two main rotor blades spinning in opposite directions; if you are going to be flying your toy inside a small room (or even outside) and want it to be very stable and easy to control, a coaxial helicopter may be the perfect choice for you. If you are not very worried about stability but still want an easy to control toy, then you can go and pick one with a single main rotor blade. Now days these gadgets have a lot of technology built inside, so the difference can be barely noticeable, and basically whatever toy that fits your budget and style should be ok. At this point I have to say that some of the single main rotor blade helicopters are for more advanced pilots, and if you are starting with this hobby, it would be best for you to choose a coaxial rotor helicopter.
Some of the best pilots in the world swear by the fact that if you don’t need replacement parts after the first month of having your flying toy, you are not using it correctly. This is something that most of the times is true, and especially if you are starting with these toys, you want to make sure that you have an extra kit of spare parts ready for whatever you need.
What do you think so far?
Selecting an RC helicopter can be very fun and entertaining, the whole task is fun since the minute you start looking for information and reading RC helicopter reviews. Of course that you want to take the price into consideration, but I can guarantee you that if you decide to purchase a cheap-poor quality toy, you will end-up spending more money repairing and making fixes on it.
If spending anything from a hundred to a couple hundred dollars purchasing a great toy is kind of a problem for you, the best and more sincere advice that I can give you is to not even start with this, go and find something else to do, because once you start with this hobby, you will look for more and more challenging helicopters to master, and then you will want to buy helis that are pricier than the ones that you used to start in the first place.
If on the other hand you decide that this hobby is for you and that you will invest wisely in your first toy, purchasing the best for you based on what I just taught you, getting some spare parts and even purchasing extra batteries (something that is also important to look for), then you are on the right path.
Think about what you just learned and find the best toy for you. A more comprehensive explanation of what to look for in an RC helicopter can be found in my best personal RC helicopters reviews.
